They only need a small piece of sharp-edged stone can make a larger one. With that, they can use the larger and stronger old-formed knife for their daily uses such as hunting, defending their lives and cutting plants and their foods.

After some time, they stopped using stones for making knives and other sharpened weapons. They substituted stronger and more malleable materials like copper, bronze and iron, the mostly and widely used material nowadays. With the better materials that were discovered, mass production of knives, swords and other weapons became possible. The profession of craftsmen arose. With more weapons, human beings had a better way of hunting. Their food production became easier. The food industry grew together with the weaponry industry. It made the lives of the ancient civilizations a lot better.

Europeans did carry their own kitchen and table knives whenever they visit other houses in the middle ages because hosts did not provide cutlery. So they have to carry it with their leather belts wherever they go.

France in 1669 banned the use of pointed tip dinner knife. King Louis of France decided that these kitchen knives and other pointed tools like forks are potentially harmful and he declared it illegal to reduce the violence in his kingdom.

As time passed by, cutlers modified the old-fashioned design of the kitchen knife. They began shaping it with rounder and wider ends so that eating people can have a better grip and control while they cut their food. They also added a pistol handle so the wrist of the users would not need to be twisted when they get the food into their mouths. Different designs were added to table and kitchen knives for aesthetic reasons.
